Ercol Grandfather Rocking Chair - Model 316

£800 (option 1)
£850 (option 2 - minor fabric flaw)
£900 (option 2 - perfect fabric)

“Imposing, comfortable, inviting. Possibly the lowest priced large size chair of such high quality. There is no more restful and relaxing way of whiling away the time than rocking. When you rock, you soothe away the stress and strain of the working day, gently exercising your muscles without tiring your feet and back. And even the most energetic rocker can never tip over backwards in a chair of Ercol design thanks to the specially designed skids.”

Taken from the Ercol archive catalogue of 1965, this description explains perfectly the reason for adding this gorgeous chair to your collection. The original dark stain has been removed to reveal the beauty of the solid beech frame and solid elm seat, and it features the Fleur de Lys motif together with four original seat poppers on the under side, onto which the cushion is attached via straps cleverly crafted in matching fabric.

I have two options available for the foam seat cushion pad, both of which are piped and zipped:

Option 1 is possibly the original foam pad, in very good working condition and slightly shallower in depth than the second option. I have covered it in Sanderson Morris & Co ‘Yew and Aril’ in Indigo (this time from the ‘Bedford Park Fabrics’ collection) 100% cotton. A simple small-scale two-toned design, Arts & Crafts designer Alan Francis Vigers’ Yew and Aril details the quiet beauty of the branches of a yew tree and its charming berries known as arils. Please note that the price of this particular seat cushion pad reflects its age and condition. However, it is still a perfectly acceptable and usable item.

Option 2 boasts a brand new foam pad, slightly deeper than the first option and also covered in Sanderson Morris & Co ‘Yew and Aril’ in Indigo (but this time taken from the ‘Little Book of Morris Fabrics’ collection) 65% linen, 26% cotton, 9% nylon. Despite both fabrics being named ‘Indigo’, they are quite different in appearance and fabric-type, although both extremely attractive. Please note that the price of this particular seat cushion pad reflects a very minor flaw on the upper side of the fabric, as shown clearly in one of the photos. This in no way detracts from its overall beauty or usage. I also have a ‘perfect’ version of this particular cover available at a slightly higher price - unfortunately not available in the photo shots, but in every way exactly the same.

Included in the price of both options are the following two beautiful piped and zipped feather scatter cushions to provide a comfortable backrest, both measuring 50cm x 50cm -

1. Covered in Sanderson Morris & Co ‘The Savaric’ in Garden Green (from the ‘Bedford Park Fabrics collection) 100% cotton. C. F. A. Voysey, one of the foremost Arts & Crafts designers and architects of his generation, here blends his architectural and decorative training. Featuring flocks of birds gracing branches below the high canopy of trees, The Savaric, originally a wallpaper design from 1896, bears the unmistakable signature bird motif indicative of Voysey’s style. In Garden Green, the authentic Arts & Crafts colour stories have been retained.
2. Covered in Sanderson Morris & Co ’Laceflower’ in Garden Green/Lagoon (from the ‘Bedford Park Fabrics collection) 100% cotton. Designed around 1895, C. F. A. Voysey’s Laceflower displays his characteristic birds swaying in an imagined wind, chirping among the stems and flowerhead. The gentle movement in the pattern is emphasised by simple saturated colour stories offering a choice of a lighter and darker feel.
